Blog Post #3    8/30/21 Week 3

English /Grammar

This week our Mentor Sentence is from the book Saturdays and Teacakes. Our focus will be on nouns, specifically proper nouns and capitalization. We will also practice identifying the simple subject and predicate in sentences.

Social Studies

We will continue to discuss symbols of the U.S.A. We will have a quiz on symbols this week and students will be asked to recite the pledge of allegiance. On Thursday we will begin to discuss The Age of Exploration and a few famous explorers. Our study will focus on the story of the first permanent European settlement in the New World.

8/23/2021 Week 2

August 21, 2021 by canterb

 English/ Grammar

We will continue to work with Mentor Sentences this week. Our focus will be on the review of types of sentences and (identifying /writing) simple subject/predicate.

Social Studies

We will continue to discuss maps, specifically Latitude and Longitude. Something you could do at home would be to look at a map and point out places your family has been. Discuss the physical features of that area and even look at the latitude and longitude. While we were looking at maps this week a couple of students were very interested in time zones listed at the top of the U.S. map. That is also a great topic for family discussion!

We will also begin to discuss American symbols. We will cover several symbols from our flag and Uncle Sam to the Twin Towers and September 11th Memorial.

One of the symbols we will discuss is the Pledge of Allegiance. One of our 5th-grade learning points (TEKS) is to recite and explain the pledge. I will be asking each student to recite the pledge on  8/30-8/31.

8/16/21 Week 1 Let’s Get Started!

August 15, 2021 by canterb

Thank you for sharing your wonderful kids with us! This has been the best school start-up of my career! High 5 to the parents! I am so happy to get this group of kids back. We did not get to finish our third-grade year the way we expected, so it is good to be with this group again for 5th grade… face to face & mask optional! I love these faces!

As we progress through this year, be sure to sign up for all five 5th Grade blogs as well as our remind app. These are a great way for you to receive timely information. If you ever have any questions please feel free to contact me by email first. If we need to have a conference, we can set up a day that works for us.

English / Grammar

We will be reviewing parts of speech this week and begin using Mentor Sentences to explore what makes a well-written sentence and how/when to edit. Here is how that works:

Each week we will explore a sentence taken from a familiar children’s literature selection.

Monday – We will read and discuss the sentence. We will identify parts of speech, subject & predicate, mood, or any other features.

Tuesday – We will label the sentence and identify features in writing.

Wednesday – We will discuss how we could change the sentence to make it better (more specific or clear).

Thursday – We will use the sentence as a model for a sentence we create ourselves and discuss how it is alike and different from the original.

Friday – Students will show what they learned on a quiz.

Social Studies

This week we will be talking about map skills and vocabulary. This should mostly be a review of familiar terms and concepts that we will use as we discuss each section of American History going forward.

We will work in small groups to look at a variety of maps and identify items on the map using a map key. We will also touch on the location of the Appalachian Mountains, Great Lakes, Great Planes, Rocky Mountains, Mississippi River, regions in the U.S., five largest cities, and patterns of settlement.
